FAQs - General Hire

Q: How old do I have to be to hire a car or van?

A: If you would like to hire a vehicle and wish to use our insurance cover then you must be between 25 and 70 years of age, and have held a full UK drivers licence for a minimum of 2 years.

Q: What documents must I bring when I collect the vehicle?

A: When taking collection of your hire vehicle you need to bring with you the following:

Drivers Licence: All persons must produce a FULL valid UK Drivers Licence which they must have held for at least two years. It is the hirer's responsibility to ensure that they have the correct licence. We are unable to accept any licence that is not in English. A Drivers Licence must be an original, a photocopy will NOT be accepted.

With effect from 8th June 2015, the paper part of the UK Drivers Licence is no longer accepted. If you wish to hire a vehicle from us using our insurance you will need to log on to www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence, enter your Drivers Licence Number, National Insurance Number and Post Code in order to generate a check code. This check code will allow us to view the paper counterpart of your Drivers Licence online so that we can check for any endorsements which might prevent us from hiring a vehicle to you. We recommend that you generate your check code shortly before your hire is due to commence as it is only valid for a maximum of THREE (3) weeks. On the day you commence your hire from Limesquare, please ensure you bring with you your full UK Photo Driving Licence, your National Insurance Number, the check code you generated, as well as three other forms of ID as detailed below.

Identification: All UK residents must be able to produce a valid passport, and TWO utility bills (or ONE utility bill plus ONE recent bank statement) dated within 3 months of the hire start date and quoting your current home address*, together with a valid credit / debit card in the name of the main hirer.

Any additional drivers must be present at the time of hiring and must be able to produce a full valid UK Drivers Licence conforming to the above criteria.

*Your home address must lie within a 22 mile radius of the Limesquare branch you wish to hire the vehicle from, supported by the relevant documentation to verify this.

Q: Are there any restrictions on my distance from your branch?

A: Your home address must lie within a 22 mile radius of the Limesquare branch you wish to hire the vehicle from, supported by the relevant documentation to verify this. If however you have a credit account with us then these restrictions do not apply.

Q: If I have endorsements on my licence can I still hire a vehicle?

A: This all depends on how many points you have and what offence they are for. Please call your local Limesquare depot who will be able to assist you with this in advance if you are concerned about being turned away.

Q: What deposit must be paid for my hire?

A: A deposit is payable by credit or debit card at the beginning of any hire and is fully refundable upon safe and undamaged return of the vehicle. Deposits vary as below:

  • £500.00 is payable if you are hiring a vehicle of any size and the vehicle will be remaining in the UK for the duration of the hire.
  • £750.00 is payable for a vehicle of any size that will be taken abroad. Such booking requests need to be made in person or over the phone and you will need to advise the hiredesk of all countries you will be entering to enable us to review your request. Under no circumstances may any Limesquare vehicle be taken out of the United Kingdom without the express written permission of Limesquare.

Q: What is the largest vehicle I can drive on a standard licence?

A: If you hold a full UK Drivers Licence that was issued before the 1st January 1997 you should be entitled to drive any vehicle up to 7.5t in Gross Vehicle Weight (providing not for hire or reward) and any minibus with up to and including a total of 17 seats. This includes all of the vehicles shown on this website. If you hold a full UK Drivers Licence that was issued after 1st January 1997 then, unless you have taken an additional test, you will only be entitled to drive a vehicle up to 3.5t Gross Vehicle Weight. This does include vehicles such as a Luton box van with a tail lift, which is commonly used for moving house (again, providing not for hire or reward) but excludes any minibus with a total of over 9 seats, unless your Drivers Licence specifies the D1 category on it.

Q: Are there any mileage restrictions?

A: All our daily hire vehicles have a mileage restriction of 100 miles per day (excess mileage charged at 25ppm for cars, 25ppm for minibuses, 22ppm for Luton / Maxiload vans, and 18ppm for all other vehicles) unless we have agreed a rate in writing in advance.

Q: What is your fuel policy?

A: All daily hire vehicles are normally provided on an empty to empty basis. We provide the vehicle with a minimal amount of fuel, allowing you to judge for yourself how much fuel you need to put in. This means that we do not charge you for fuel deposits. Likewise, we do not reimburse a hirer for any fuel left in the vehicle on its return. If the vehicle is supplied with fuel we will expect the same amount of fuel on its return and a charge will be made for any shortfall.

Q: Do you guarantee a specific model of vehicle?

A: The vehicles shown on our tariff sheet and website are typical of the most common vehicles that we hire. We regret that we are not able to guarantee a specific make and model, only the group of that model vehicle. In the unlikely event that we do not have a vehicle available in the group you have booked, we will only ever upgrade you to the next highest vehicle group.

Q: Can an additional driver be added to a hire?

A: We can add additional drivers to any hire agreement (subject to our driver criteria) at a cost of £22.00 per driver per week or £4.00 per driver per day for hires of less than 7 days. Any additional drivers that you need adding to a hire agreement must be present at the time of hiring and are subject to the same restrictions as the main driver. Charges for additional drivers are payable at the time of hire. Each additional driver is also responsible as hirer under the terms of our contract and will need to sign our rental agreement.

Q: Can you arrange delivery and collection of vehicles?

A: For a small additional cost, delivery and collection can be arranged for those customers who have a credit account with us and are hiring from us on their own insurance. Unfortunately this is not a service we can offer for non-account holders.

Q: Do you allow one-way rentals within Limesquare depots?

A: We do not currently offer one-way rentals within Limesquare depots.

Q: Do you provide breakdown cover?

A: We provide full 24 hour breakdown cover. In the unlikely event that you should breakdown, simply telephone the number on the breakdown card holder and the manufacturer's breakdown agents will send out the nearest repair unit. A charge will be levied for any negligent call outs (including but not limited to punctures and windscreen repairs / replacements).

Q: What should I do if the vehicle is involved in an accident?

A: In the event of our vehicle being involved in an accident, there are several things that you need to do:

  • Get full details of the other party and their vehicle.
  • Contact your local branch on 0871 200 3313.
  • Complete an Accident claim form and return it to the local branch.

You need to perform the above actions as soon as possible after the accident to avoid any complications with your claim.

Q: Can I take a Limesquare vehicle abroad?

A: Under no circumstances may any Limesquare vehicle be taken out of the United Kingdom without the express written permission of Limesquare.

Q: Do you have any cleaning charges?

A: We do not normally impose a cleaning charge for our hire vehicles when they are returned except in the case of negligent abuse, smoking / vaping, or if a pet has been carried in the vehicle. If in doubt you should contact us prior to your hire period commencing. Under no circumstances is smoking allowed in the vehicle, a charge of £100 + VAT will be levied to fumigate the vehicle.

Q: What is your grace period for returning a hire vehicle?

A: There is usually a 30 minute grace period when you return your hire vehicle. If the vehicle is returned outside of this period then additional rental (and if applicable, insurance) charges will be payable.

Q: Will Limesquare provide a child seat for a vehicle if requested?

A: Unfortunately we cannot provide child seats for our vehicles but you are welcome to fit your own if you wish.
